WordPress Permalink Fix
Wow, I just killed all the links to this blog for an hour. If you have a blog on WordPress I can give you some advice on search engine optimization that will give you a huge boost with the search engines. I can also provide an important “don’t do as I did!” to prevent your blog navigation links from becoming useless.
The url extensions that your blog is creating depends on the WordPress theme you are using or the permalink setting you or your webmaster selected. From an SEO point of view the best url extensions is made up of your keywords for that particular post. You want the search engines to “understand” what your post is about; and the date, arbitrary number, etc. isn’t going to clear things up for the search engine robots.
So, to fix WordPress permalinks follow these simple steps:
1. In your navigation bar near the bottom of the page go to Settings>Permalinks
2. Select the “Custom” radio button and type in the box /%postname%/
3. Don’t copy and paste in the options above, say in the default section. This is what I did and then I just changed the extension, but every link added the entire website domain name and… well, just save your sanity and don’t make that mistake.
4. Another SEO trick is to edit your url extension after you write the title to your new post you can click on the edit bottom just below the title where it shows you what the final url will be. Remove non keywords, such as a, I, the, etc. That will help the search engine robots to focus on your keywords and the relavancy between your post content and url will be high, which will help with your Google Page Rank.
This will fix WordPress permalink issues, but you may want to add the plugin “permalink permanent move” to redirect ‘bots and readers to the appropriate post at its new location.
