Part 3: Once you have listed your hobbies and interests, it is time to see if there is a market for any of them.

Wordtracker

Go to WordTracker and sign up for a free trial. This is where the professionals do their keyword research. I will describe methods that I use, but you should try various methods to find what works best for you. Perform Full Keyword search for each of the topics on your list following the steps below:

1. Log into Wordtracker.

2. Click on “Full Search”.

3. Add your keyword or phrase.

4. Check the box for as many of the associated search terms as you wish that are related to golf.

5. Click “Email Results” to yourself and save the email in a “Keyword” file that may be used later, perhaps after your Wordtracker subscription has expired. Use the keyword that you did the search for as the subject for the email so that you will know which is which in your email account. The keywords and analysis can serve as a valuable brainstorming tool for coming up with new products for niche markets.

6. Click on “Click for Results” at the bottom of page.

7. Click on all the keyphrases that meet your popularity requirements. Count: This number indicates how many times a certain keyword appeared in the Wordtracker database. The Wordtracker database holds about 300,000,000 words, so a count of 200 means that the keyword appeared 200 times over a 130 day period. Predict: This number indicates the maximum predicted daily searches for all major search engines and includes pay per bids and directories and includes:

•    Google

•    Yahoo

•    MSN

•    Ask

•    AOL

•    Altavista

•    Excite

•    Lycos

8.    Click the “Click Here To Perform A Competition Search”

9.    Choose one or two search engines to analyze. The program only allows two search engines for each search to avoid overloading servers. Select Google and the second search engine of your choice (I usually use Yahoo as my second choice).

10.  Look for keywords and phrases that could all be used for your product. How many keywords and phrases have a KEI of more than 100? If there are only a few, then it may prove to be a tough market to break into. The more keywords and phrases with little competition provide the opportunity for you and your affiliates to create articles and blog postings that can rank high in search engines, which can result in more traffic/sales.

KEI (Keyword Effectiveness Index): Basically the higher the KEI number the better. Higher KEI keywords are popular and have less competition. This is a good tool for determining niche markets, domain names, and keywords for webpages.

In the above example, the results are for Google only, which is about 68% of the market share. This means that the 24-hour count of 1,423 for Golf Cages is more like 2,093 including all search engines and directories.

The Competing column shows the results of the number of competing webpages for this search engine. It is a good idea to check out the top search results for the keywords you are considering to determine if the webpages have evidence of advanced search engine optimization (SEO). If the top couple of pages of results are filled with well optimized webpages, your chances of obtaining organic search traffic is slim. (define organic search traffic).

In the above list there are only a couple of keywords with a decent KEI. Perhaps there is a market for a “Build Your Own Backyard Golf Cages Guide” with bonus products related to improving golf skills.

Each of your hobbies and interests needs to be researched for market size and existing competition.

Pick a niche that can be added to, with at least 10 more ebook topics and which can include multiple products such as software, videos, ebooks, etc. Chances are that it will take many product launches to really bring decent checks, so why not use Product 1 infrastructure to make Products 2 – 10 easier and less costly to prepare. Not to mention that you will be collecting email lists that will be interested in your related products. You will have three email lists:

1. Affiliates – You have an existing relationship with your affiliates, and it is critical to continue to provide? them with additional products to promote in the same niche. If you offer affiliate tools, then I recommend that you require affiliates to sign up with their name and email address for inclusion in your email marketing program.

2. Customers – You also have an existing relationship with your customers. You should also be providing your customers with a monthly newsletter where you can promote future related products for free. Customers will have to sign up to your “Customers” email marketing list.

3. Potential Customers – You should attempt to capture the name and email address of people that decide not to buy and are clicking away from your site. You can do this using an exit pop-up window that offers a free special report or ebook (something of value that shows the quality of your core product).

Another huge advantage of creating products for the same niche is that you can cross promote all of them, which will also reduce your time to market and cost. This can also work for niches that are too small, or hypersegmentation, for a single product, but can be profitable through multiple offerings. Cross promotion examples:

•   Product 3 is the core product and Product 2 is offered as an upsell to generate additional revenue and Product 1 is offered as a bonus or as a part of the core package with Product 3 for a higher price.

•   Product 6 is the core product selling for $24.95, and the upsell is Products 1 – 5 bundled for $67.95.

An example of a niche market with future related products follows:

•   Product 1: Learn to Play Golf Guidebook

•   Product 2: Drive 300 Yards Straight Every Time Video

•   Product 3: Special Report: Secret Practice Strategies To Shave 3 Stokes Off Your Score

•   Product 4:  How To Achieve The Perfect Swing Manual Etc.

Once you have launched your first product the next ones will be much faster, which is very important. If you are like me, you need to make enough money to put food on the table and pay the bills ASAP! This likely won’t happen entirely with the first product, so let’s get a system in place to create many products that will each generate at least $500 per month. Once you have saturated the market with products for a specific niche, then you can move onto a new niche.

So you are interested in becoming a successful Internet Marketer because:

1. You are an affiliate helping the publishers become wealthy and you want a piece of the pie, or

2. You need a new career or at least a backup career with the current financial turmoil in the world.

Step One

Write down the answers to the following questions:

1. What are your interests?

2. What are your hobbies?

3. What book topics do you read about?

4. Are you interested in doing research?

All your hobbies, interests, and things that affect your life in a negative or positive way. The list will be long and it will take several days as items will come up that you didn’t think of earlier. Choosing your first niche market is about as important a decision as you can make if you want to succeed in Internet Marketing. You will need to spend many hours researching potential markets and products and also determining your needs, wants, and skills. To improve the chances of success I HIGHLY recommend that you select a market that you are passionate about, or you risk not giving it 100% for the duration of the development, launch, and post launch.

Whatever topic you choose, make sure you are committed to it. Writing a book is a long process, yet rewarding for both you and your audience. Make it enjoyable!

It was going to happen sooner or later. The power of the ebook rages forward with new authors jumping on the bandwagon every day. Writing and publishing ebooks is an extremely easy process when compared to conventional book publishing and anyone can join in as a part time or full time income.

This ebooks overtaking hardbacks announcement will provoke horror among those who can think of nothing better than spending an afternoon rummaging around a musty old bookshop. In what could be a watershed for the publishing industry, Amazon said sales of digital books have outstripped US sales of hardbacks on its website for the first time.

Amazon claims to have sold 143 digital books for its e-reader, the Kindle, for every 100 hardback books over the past three months. The pace of change is also accelerating. Amazon said that in the most recent four weeks, the rate reached 180 ebooks for every 100 hardbacks sold. Jeff Bezos, founder of Amazon, said sales of the Kindle and ebooks had reached a “tipping point”, with five authors including Steig Larsson, the writer of Girl with a Dragon Tattoo, and Stephenie Meyer, who penned the Twilight series, each selling more than 500,000 digital books. Earlier this month, Hachette said that James Patterson had sold 1.1m ebooks to date.

Neill Denny, editor-in-chief of the Bookseller, said the figures from Amazon were “eye-catching”, but added a note of scepticism. He said that while ebooks had outnumbered hardbacks in volume, they were likely to be some distance behind in value. Some of the bestsellers listed on the Kindle top 10 list today were retailing for as little as $1.16 (75p). John Makinson says publishers must give customers what they want, and if that means new technology that is no problem.

Penguin celebrates 75 years and is marking the anniversary by repackaging a series of seminal books from the 1960s to the 1980s. Although the company might afford itself a brief look backwards, it feels as though there is little room for nostalgia in book publishing now, as the industry turns its face firmly – and apprehensively – to the future.

Amazon last week announced sales of ebooks on its US site had outnumbered hardbacks for the first time, stunning casual observers, even if it had not been entirely unexpected in the trade.

The launch of the iPad has added a sense of urgency. Where music went first, books are set to follow, although Penguin and other publishers would hope without the same devastating effects. Amazon this week launched a cheaper, more lightweight version of its Kindle ebook reader and a digital store on its UK site, while others, including Google, are muscling in. You have been hearing about it, or you know what it is, but need help finding the right niche for you. You will find the tools and steps in this whitepaper. Dictionary.com’s most appropriate definition of ‘niche’, as far as Internet Marketers are concerned, is “a distinct segment of a market”. An example, golf is a large market, golf clubs are a niche of that market, and golf club driver heads are a sub-niche of the niche. You can continue down the line further if necessary, such as golf>club>driver heads>Taylor Made.

So why is it so important to market to a niche market?

Most importantly, the rate of success selling in a niche market is much higher than selling in a broad and generic market.

Is it easy to identify a niche market to sell products to?
It can be time consuming, but it is the most critical step that you will make to earn money on the Internet. It is much less difficult if you know how to conduct the research. This is the first and most important step to finding a niche market.

The niche market that you enter must have your interest. If you are not interested in the market, your drive and effectiveness will wane, and your profits will follow.

You also need the skills that are needed to support and back up your product as you will become known as a respected expert in the field by providing a valuable resource to the market.

You want to identify a hot market with a hungry target market that ‘needs’ or ‘really, really wants’ your product. It is important to pick a market that can afford to purchase your product. Consider the spending habits of your target market. Is this a market where people spend lots of disposable income on themselves for entertainment purposes (think golf: mostly professional with money to pump into green fees and equipment each year)? Is this market full of impulsive buyers or procrastinators? Watch out for markets that may be potentially tight fisted (check the related website forums for how many people are looking for deals and free items), analytical, (think engineers. My father and wife are engineers, and it takes them an eternity to purchase anything, regardless of cost. By the time their analysis is complete, the make or model is discontinued or updated so the research cycle continues…), and trust based (the market that may buy medical field information products, such as on a disorder or disease), are a tough sell because they are looking for the trust factor. If they don’t know your name and you have no credible and recognizable sponsors or testimonials, you will have a tough sell.
This may sound difficult, but it isn’t. Since you are reading this document, I will guess that you want to make a decent living with Internet Marketing, so you will repeat the process over and over until it becomes second nature. And starting off correctly with your first product will dramatically increase your chances of success. Some things to keep in mind are:

1. Remember that hot selling topics will always include dating/relationships, making money, and dieting.

2. Make certain the topics you write about are not something that will embarrass you because you will become a recognized expert in the field, so

3. Make certain that you enjoy the topic of your choice, as the project will seem more like a hobby with the benefit of revenue rather than a job or career.

4. Make certain that you understand the needs of the customer in the market that you are considering. I cannot stress this enough. If you understand the needs of your potential customers, you will have an enormous advantage over about 97% of your competitors. An example, I spent a ton of time and money researching a topic for Internet Marketing, but nobody actually showed me in detail, the information was scattered around the Internet in multiple forums and eBooks. A subtitle should be included, and its purpose is only for search engine optimization (SEO). I learned how to increase ebook sales with this simple practice and the subtitle should be long and full of keywords. The only purpose of the subtitle is to contain your highest priority keywords, with the highest listed first. This is an effective SEO plan for your landing page, back links, and specialty search engines, like Amazon. If you plan to sell on Amazon, this little SEO tip will give you an advantage over most of the authors. Few authors know anything about SEO and marketing, so use it to your advantage.


It is important to optimize the subtitle with the exact keyword phrase that buyers are searching for in the search engines or on Amazon or Barnes and Noble. For example, if you are in the golf niche market and you are writing a book about low cost methods of improving your game you may consider:

Subtitle: Make Your Own Putting Green and Practice Your Golf Skills in Your Backyard

The above title offers a solution to the problem of how to lower your golf score. This title will appeal to golfers who want to lower their golf score. Perhaps they aren’t interested in building a putting green in their back yard, but at least you got their attention for an opportunity to sell them further with the subtitle. This subtitle is loaded with key-words/phrases that the search engines and Amazon search feature will love. The keywords were selected using the Wordtracker keyword tool.

Although a super long subtitle may seem unprofessional, who cares. It will increase ebook sales and that is the goal. You are not a stuffy college professor trying to impress your students; you are an internet marketer trying to make money. Even when loaded up with keywords, you should be painting a clear picture of what the book is about to your potential buyer. The extra long subtitle actually helps make your title more visible in the search results of search engines and Amazon, which results in more clicks.

How long is long? The limitations are with Amazon, which allow up to 200 characters for the title and subtitle. Lightning Source limits subtitles to 116 characters. If you plan on selling your ebook as a physical book through bookstores other than Amazon, you will want to have two subtitles. One title and subtitle for Lightning Source, 116 characters, and one for Amazon, 200 characters. You can modify your Amazon listing after it has been automatically generated by Amazon after submission of your eBook to Lightning Source.
