Tips for Buying a Profitable Domain Name

January 30th, 2009

Register your domain name at one of the popular domain registration websites. Make the domain as short as possible with your keyword/phrase and use a Top Level Domain. The best real estate on the Internet is and always will be .com, so consider this when buying a domain name.

The practice of adding hyphens to a domain name is still being debated.

Pros include:

  • Easier to obtain a domain name as hyphens increase the number of possibilities using the same key phrase.
  • Potentially better for Search Engine Optimization (SEO) as the hyphen clearly separates the keywords to reduce the possibility that the search engines confuse your keywords. This possibility is greatly reduced with the ever improving search engine software

Cons include:

  • Difficult to communicate a domain with hyphens. Imagine telling someone to go to NewMarketHurricanes.com compared to new-market-hurricanes.com.
  • Considered less important and sometimes spammy by many people.
  • Longer domain with hyphens.
  • Increased number of available domains when using numbers with your keywords, but it can add confusion to search engines (is it 1 or one?), and it rarely “rolls off the tongue” or is memorable.

The below is a step by step guide to setting up your domain name, hosting account, and blog. Instructions are based on the more popular providers of each service.

Go to GoDaddy.com, or your favorite domain registration company, and register your domain name. Set up a web hosting package.

SETTING UP WEBHOSTING STEPS

Go to UltraWebsiteHosting.com, or your favorite hosting company, and set up an Ultra Hosting Plan or an Ultra Reseller Plan. The Reseller Plan gives you 10 GBs of disk space and 400 GBs for as many websites as you wish, and it is quite simple to use. Bookmark the log in URL so that it is easy to find in the future.
